Quick Navigation

Divine Origin

The Lalitha Sahasranama (Sanskrit: ललिता सहस्रनाम) is no ordinary hymn.
First composed by the eight celestial goddesses of speech Vāgdevatās (Vasini, Kameshwari, Aruna, Vimala, Jayinee, Modhinee, Sarveshwari, Kaulini) under the direct command of Goddess Lalitha Tripurasundari.
Later conveyed to humanity through the sacred dialogue of Lord Hayagriva (Vishnu’s horse-headed form of supreme wisdom) and Sage Agastya, one of the esteemed Saptarishis.
Appears in the Brahmanda Purana (Uttara Khanda (the last section)), unique for its divine authorship and scriptural preservation.

Scriptural Context and Sacred Dialogue

In the Lalitopakhyana section, Lord Hayagriva reveals the thousand names to Agastya as a supreme path of devotion and liberation.

Dhyāna Shloka: Meditative Visualization

Opening verses present a sequential, symbolic vision of the goddess from crown to posture — showing her as both supreme cosmic power and loving mother.
Each name is a mantra with deep esoteric meaning in the Śrīvidyā tradition.

Structure of the Thousand Names

  • First 84 names: vivid head-to-toe visualization.
  • Remaining names: her powers, compassion, and roles in creation, preservation, and dissolution.

Unique Features

  • No repetition — all names are distinct.
  • Recitation possible only by her grace.
  • Benefits: fulfills desires, removes obstacles, purifies the mind, and grants Moksha (liberation).
